No man can fully grasp how far and how fast we have come, but condense, if you will, the 50,000 years of man¹s recorded history in a time span of but a half-century. 5 Stated in these terms, we know very little about the first 40 years, except at the end of them advanced man had learned to use the skins of animals to cover them. Then about 10 years ago, under this standard, man emerged from his caves to construct other kinds of shelter. Only five years ago man learned to write and use a cart with wheels. Christianity began less than two years ago. The printing press came this year, and then less than two months ago, during this whole 50-year span of human history, the steam engine provided a new source of power.
Newton explored the meaning of gravity. Last 6 ( ) electric lights and telephones and automobiles and airplanes became available. まずは、区切りを入れるとことから始めるのでした。そして区切りごとにどんどん文の頭から理解していくことが大事です。では第１文から。

すこ分かりやすいですね？
No man can fully grasp「何者も完全には理解し得ない」
how far and how fast we have come「どれほど遠く、そして速いスピードで我々がここに到達したのかは」
いったんここで、前半部分が終わっています。ここまでは問題なく理解できるでしょう。さて、ここからちょっと分かりにくくなります。
まずif you willは「まあやってみましょうか」「仮に（will以下を）やるとすると」といった意味の挿入句で、ちょっと非現実的な提案をする際などに使います。
ではケネディ大統領は何を提案しているのかというと、ここでcondenseという第2の動詞が出てきます。あまり見かけない動詞ですが、気づきましたか？しかも原型でポンと入っていますから、命令形ですね。コンデンス・ミルクのコンデンスと同じで、「圧縮する」という意味です。
何をcondenseするという提案かというと、the 50,000 years of man’s recorded history「人類史5万年」をin a time span of but a half-century「たった半世紀という長さ」に圧縮しようと言っています。butは「ほんの少し」という感じで使われておりonlyの代用です。
これで問2の答えが出ました。

一見、選択肢 a でも正しいように見えます。ただしa half-centuryにcondenseしようと言っている点を反映させ、正解は d です。a はひっかけの選択肢として入れました。
覚えているでしょうか、試験を作る側は点差をつけて合格者を厳選したいのです。さらに、満点は取らせたくないです。そこで、こうやって意地の悪い選択肢を入れるのです。そうすれば、d までちゃんと全部選択肢を読んだ、慎重な学生をピックアップできますから。
ここから先の文章も、この5万年を半世紀で考えるという枠の中で語られます。

5万年を50年と数えるのですから、1年が約1000年ですね。1ヶ月が100年弱ですから、このXは過去100年つまり1ヶ月ぐらいかなと推測されます。
次は少し長いので、区切ってみましょう。

ペニシリンやテレビの発明というと、電気や電話よりは後ですね。ただ選択肢でmonthがあるのはaだけですから、これを選ぶとYの答えはweekとなります。
ケネディ大統領は過去1週間（1000/52週=19.2年）でこれらが発明されたと言っています。演説時が1962年ですから、だいたいそれぐらいですね。
