藤田保健衛生大学の予想問題 ー ケネディ大統領のスピーチの解説 5/6

前も出張したことのあるオフィスとはいえ、出張初日はやはり大変でした。今日は少し短めに、空所9と10だけカバーします。

問1．英文の空所9, 10に、それぞれ与えられた文字で始まる単語を入れなさい。

実際の大統領のスピーチでは、

★We choose to go to the moon.

となっていました。「我々は月に行くことを選択する」という強い意志を示す言い方です。誰も行ったことのない月に行く、すべての危険とコストを押して行く。その選択をするのだと宣言しています。なぜchooseであって過去形choseじゃないかというと、2文目の

★We choose to go to the moon /　

in this decade / 10年以内に

and do the other things…/ そして他のこともする

という文に引っ張られているからですね。これからやるつもりですから、過去形は使えません。かといって未来形は（　　　　）にあ当てはまらない。現在形にすることで、「今ここでこの決断をする」という臨場感を出すことに成功しています。

同じことを2語で言うなら、

★We are committed to～.「～する決意を固めている」

となります。これも今、その決意があるわけですから、現在形です。

さらに続けて、ケネディ大統領は色々な対比をさせながら話を展開しています。

★… not because they are easy, / 「それらが簡単だからではなく（このtheyはother thingsのこと）

but because they are hard, / 「それらが難しいから」

because that goal will serve to organize and measure ～/「その目標により～を組織立てて計測できるから」

the best of our energies and skills,/「我々の持ちうる最高のエネルギーと能力とを」

次も似た流れです。

★because that challenge is the one that we are willing to accept,/「その挑戦は我々が喜んで受け入れるものだから」

one we are unwilling to postpone, /「我々が延期を望まないものだから」

and one which we intend to win, /「我々が勝つ気でいる挑戦だから」

and the others, too.「我々以外の人々もきっとそうだろう」

こうして対比を続け、なぜわざわざ月を目指すのかというスピーチをしているわけですから、「なぜなら」という接続詞becauseが答えです。
